Digital Portfolios & Resumes :: Spring 2010 Auburn PR Students (Now with more Mobile!)

First time ever … mobile editions to our PR student digital portfolios and resumes.

Here they are. All good people. Hire them!

This is the first time I’ve required the students do a mobile version. Only a few chose to go the full route. Everyone had to at least use the simple Google tool to create a version. Some have chosen (or will chose) to take down that Google version, as it is a wee bit quirky. I have chosen to list those that I found that will (I pray) display properly on a mobile device. The WordPress versions are fine. It is the Google versions that seem to go a bit goofy at times.

Most should have some version located at the “m..com” URL for their site. We got stuck for time at the conclusion of the semester, so I did not hold their feet to the fire on this part of the project. I will do that next semester. ;o) Still some quirks to work out, but I’m happy with what we did this semester.

I’ve offered to continue to help those that want to do the entire mobile thang over the coming weeks. We’ll see how many buy in. To me, this is important for students to have. How many PR pros will receive an email and perhaps click on a link to your resume? Wouldn’t it be cool if they had a mobile version to view?

Mobile is the 900 lb. gorilla, people. Let’s show potential employers that you are thinking about mobile. This is certainly one way to accomplish that objective.

Note: The students are listed in the order they shared their URLs with me on a Google form I use at the end of the semester. So, they really are not in any particular order, except for those at the top with their mobile sites. I pulled them out and moved them to the top.

Fall 2008 saw a new group of students create their digital portfolios and resumes.

I’ve been slow in sharing last semester’s student projects. My apologies.

Below, you will see links to all of the digital portfolio and resume projects from my students last semester, Fall 2008.

Check them out. Hire them. Bring them in for internships. A few have already graduated and landed jobs, but some are still looking. We always tell them not to ’settle’ for a job, but rather to seek out the job they really want. Find that “right fit” for themselves.

Your firm or organization may well be the fit they are looking for in public relations/marketing.

Below you’ll find a wide variety of students. Some of them have graduated, or will soon, and you may be able to grab them for a job. So, please check out their offerings.

This semester, we’re stepping up the digital resume/portfolio project. More on that, later.

Fall 2007 saw a new batch of PR student projects. The following came from the good folks in the PRCM 4020 Style & Design class.

This is the kind of information I’ll share here in PR Prospects. We’ll highlight student campaign projects, media rooms and kits … and more.

As you’ll learn, if you follow this site, I love my students and I’m very proud of them. This group put in a lot of work on these projects. Please, give them a look and perhaps offer them a job or internship.

Digital portfolios help put students ahead of their peers. I’m convinced of that. It is one more way to share the experience they’ve gained during college. Nothing wrong with showing that you are familiar with social media, too. Each of these students are familiar with blogs, video blogging, social media releases and more.

I’m now preparing for the Spring 2008 semester. Look for notes about what we’re going to be doing and then I’ll share examples here, too.

Student Digital Resumes and Portfolios :: Summer 2007

This summer’s digital resumes and portfolios are complete. The project wound up being a bit different than usual, due to the short five week mini-mester term. But, the projects have some new aspects which, I believe, make them more appealing.

I appreciate the work of these fourteen students. Hire them and/or select them for internships.

Each project contains two major sections. First, there is the resume, an HTML version of the usual Word document. Second, you’ll find the digital portfolio. It contains samples from the work product of these students over their college career.

One new addition to the project is video. Students created video interviews with students, faculty and staff around Auburn. All of those interviews were posted at the Loveliest Village Journal, too.

Thanks to a product recommendation from Edelman’s Rick Murray, the students used Pure Digital’s Flip camera to shoot the video. Offering remarkable video quality (given the cost) and ease to operate, the Flip camera worked quite well. Microsoft’s Movie Maker software edited and produced the interviews. We kept the length of the videos between one and three minutes.

The camera is only $90 and Movie Maker is a free download. So, I treated the camera as if it were a book purchase for the class. Often texts cost much more, $100 to $125 is not uncommon, so this was a reasonable expectation for the students. We will continue using the camera in Fall semester classes.

OK, here they are. Great students, if you ask me. Give them your consideration, please.

I’m slowly adding in all the older class projects here. Seeing all of these makes me wish I had required the posting of the digital resume/portfolio projects years ago. They actually help students in their pursuit of internships and jobs.

I’m proud of them all. Hey, this was new and they took to the challenge. I’ll admit that it was hard for a group that, for the most part, come into the class with varying levels of experience with all of this software. Our goal is to provide them with an overview of the software so that they may be knowledgeable when serving the interests of their clients in the future.

Here is a sampling of the software programs the students explored. Katherine Liles shared a list of the software titles on her resume.

Adobe Indesign – A graphic design layout page.

Adobe Photoshop – A professional image editing and graphics creation program.

SnagIt – A program that allows you to capture any images, text, or video on your screen.

Macromedia Dreamweaver – A program that provides users with a graphical interface for the creation of web pages. This type of program is commonly referred to as a “HTML editor”.

Macromedia Flash – A program that allows you to integrate video, text, graphics and audio into interactive web sites.

Audacity – An audio recording and editing program.

There are actually other software packages involved in the project. Some of those are Skype, HotRecorder and Color Cop.

Also, the students utilized templates available from the Open Source Web Design Project (oswd.org).

To put it simply, Open Source Web Design is a collection of web designs submitted by the community that anyone can download free of charge!

Students edit and modify the themes to suit their project needs. This is one way to develop an understanding of HTML and CSS. I don’t intend for the students to leave as software and Web developers, as that isn’t realistic. Also, they don’t need to be developers. They do need to leave with a working understanding of the processes, and this project serves that purpose.
